How Lasers Can Stimulate Hair Growth
Laser hair removal is clearly about getting rid of hair, but now a laser treatments are also available to stimulate hair growth.
It can be a bit confusing to understand how the same technology can be used in two completely opposite ways!
The key difference is how the laser energy is used and applied.
The technology used to stimulate hair growth is generally within a different kind of system to that used for laser hair removal. For hair restoration, laser tends to be applied to the scalp in a more diffuse way and at a lower energy. At low powers, laser can work beneath the skin’s surface to stimulate hair growth, helping those for whom hair loss or the process of going bald are happening too early or are causing distress.
Yet in laser hair removal, the lasers used are much more highly powered. Here, the laser energy is delivered in a far more focused and targeted way. The laser energy then works beneath the surface of the skin to destroy the hair follicle so that hair cannot regrow.
Unfortunately, there have been a few cases where laser hair removal has the opposite effect – by making the hair grow more rather than stopping it altogether. When this happens, the problem is down to the laser hair removal being set at too low a power level, so that it stimulates rather than stops the hair growth.
If the procedure was about hair reduction, the results can be very upsetting – especially if it occurs in a visible areas such as the face.
Getting the right power setting for laser hair removal is absolutely key to getting the right result. This needs to take into account both hair colour and skin type, as well as the area being treated. Too low a power setting could be ineffective or counterproductive. Yet too high a laser setting can be dangerous, causing burns in extreme cases.
