Oprah Laser Hair Removal Checklist

Our Answers to Some Very Important Questions

The Oprah website features advice on laser hair removal with 5 key questions to ask before signing up for treatment.

We think these are a great set of questions for anyone who is considering laser hair removal. We include Oprah website’s advice along with our own answers.

1. How many lasers are on the premises, and are they rented or owned?

Quinn Clinics says:

“We have a choice of 2 laser hair removal machines:

“Both are advanced laser (not IPL) systems. They are owned by Quinn Clinics and not rented.”

Oprah website says:

“The more lasers a doctor or medispa has access to, the greater the likelihood you’ll be treated with the safest, most effective one for your skin color and hair type. Be wary if machines are rented: Chances are the outfit is doing only a few procedures a month.”

2. What lasers do you use for hair removal, which one is best for my skin, and why?

Quinn Clinics says:

“We have a choice of two lasers so that we are able to use the most appropriate one for each client. For example, the Syneron Candela elōs Plus is fast and efficient on larger areas, while the Lumenis Lightsheer is excellent choice for more delicate or sensitive areas. For each client, we consider the area being treated as well as their skin and hair types in order to recommend the best option for them.

Oprah website says:

“The doctor or technician should be able to articulate why a particular laser is the best match for you (taking into account your skin tone, hair texture, and color) and any potential complications.”

3. How many laser hair removal treatments have you performed?

Quinn Clinics says:

“We don’t have a figure, but we’ve been offering laser hair removal in our Bristol clinic for many years. In 2015 we replaced our trusted Lumenis Lightsheer for the latest DESIRE model which had been in use for a number of years previously. We’ve also offered laser hair removal in our London clinic since it opened in 2013. Altogether we must have carried out thousands of treatment sessions.”

Oprah website says:

“There’s no standard “laser hair removal certification,” so this is the best way to gauge a person’s experience level. The answer should be at least a few hundred.”

4. How many sessions will I need?

Quinn Clinics says:

“Clients often notice some difference after the first session or two with hair growing sparser and finer. However, as hair grows in a ‘cycle’ it is important to have a course of treatment for optimum results. We generally recommend 6 treatments and offer a discount to encourage clients to book this all at once so that they can follow through with the sessions.”

Oprah website says:

“The average number of visits necessary to see permanent hair reduction is four to six—but some people respond well in two sessions, and others need a dozen. That is why a “package deal” offered for laser hair removal is often more advantageous for the doctor or technician than for the patient.”

5. Can you treat me if I have a tan?

Quinn Clinics says:

“We can’t treat tanned skin for two reasons. Firstly, best and most efficient results will be achieved where the skin is light and the hair is dark; and secondly, the skin is more sensitive to UV light after treatment.

“We recommend treatment while the skin is pale, so start out of season or wait for tanned skin to fade before beginning treatment.

“There should be no fake tan on the area to be treated. Home use fake tans should be left for 2 weeks prior to your laser treatment and professional spray tans need to fade for 4 weeks. Clients cannot use sunbeds whilst having a course of laser.

“Sunscreen should be worn for the month following treatment to protect sensitive skin as well as keeping it lighter for subsequent sessions.

“This is important advice for safety and results, but it does also depend what area is being treated. E.g. underarms or bikini line are much less exposed.  Clients are invited to come and have a chat with our laser hair removal therapists to find out more and work out a suitable treatment schedule which works around holidays etc.”

Oprah website says:

“If the answer is yes, head the other way. “The only way to treat tanned skin without causing burns is to use such low settings that treatment wouldn’t be effective,” says Ranella Hirsch, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine.”
