Science of Hair Removal, Slow Motion Video

How does laser hair removal work?

The science bit!

laser-hair-removal-scienceA video on youtube entitled ‘Science of Laser Hair Removal in SLOW MOTION’ explains exactly how the laser works to destroy hair, providing long-lasting hair reduction.

The video includes a slow motion closeup of laser hair removal, which shows how the hair is destroyed, creating a ‘laser plume’ of smoke (fast forward to 1 minute).

The video has clocked up nearly 4 million views so far.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Melanin in dark hair absorbs the laser light more than the skin, heating the hair to over 100ºC, causing it to burn and vaporising the water contained. The closeup video shows the bubbles on the hair caused by vaporisation. However, the hair in the video was left long in order to demonstrate how laser works. Usually the hair is very short or shaved prior to treatment, making it safer and more comfortable.

The presenter explains:

“Cells suffer damage when their temperature rises above 60º celsius. This is because at that temperature, the bonds in proteins and collagen molecules start breaking apart and that’s a process known as denaturation. So the hotter it is and the longer that temperature is maintained, the more denaturation occurs and the higher the likelihood that that cell will die. Now if you cause enough damage to the cells in the follicle that make the hair, that hair will never grow back and that is the goal of laser hair removal.

“The sequence of ultrashort pulses is used to ensure that the heat doesn’t spread too far into the region surrounding the hair. So the idea is the hair heats up, damages the germ cells right next to it, but then the laser light turns off before that heat can spread too much further, and then you hit the hair with another very short pulse again.”
