Female Hirsutism and Ferriman-Gallwey Score
Excessive Hair Growth in Women
Hirsutism is the medical term for excessive or unwanted hair on a woman’s body or face.
Women naturally have light hair on their face or body, but in the case of hirsutism, the excessive hair tends to be coarser and darker, making it very much more obvious and causing the patient to feel quite self-conscious about it.
It is thought that hirsutism affects 5-10% of women and it tends to run in families.
The problem is caused by higher than normal levels of androgens, including testosterone. One common cause is PCOS (polycystic ovaries syndrome). Other causes are adrenal gland disorders and certain medications.
It appears in areas where it’s typically seen in men i.e. face, abdomen, chest, arms, or back.
The Ferriman-Gallwey score is a simple, inexpensive, and reliable tool for measuring and diagnosing hirsutism. It consists of pictures of hair distribution on the upper lip, chin, chest, back, abdomen, arm, forearm, thigh, and lower leg. Each area is scored from 0 to 4, with 4 being heavy hair growth. After each area is scored, the numbers are added together for a total score. Most experts agree that a total of 8 indicates hirsutism.
Treatment for Hirsutism
The most appropriate treatment to a certain extent depends on the cause of excess hair. There may be an underlying medical condition or medication requirement which should be considered properly.
For most people, regular hair removal techniques are an economical way to manage excessive or unwanted hair. Waxing, creams, shaving, electrolysis or laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal
Of the options, Laser Hair Removal is seen as an excellent long-lasting solution to excessive hair. The procedure uses intense light energy to shrivel hair and destroy the follicle so it can’t regrow.
