The Hair Growth Cycle – Timing Laser Treatment
Did you know, that hair doesn’t grow at a consistent rate? In fact it grows in cycles and this is why it takes a course of laser hair removal treatment to get the best results.
Laser hair removal is performed by delivering highly concentrated laser energy into the hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs the light and that in turn gradually destroys the hair.
Understanding the hair growth cycle helps laser hair removal technicians to plan the most effective course of treatment.
Hair Growth Cycle
Hair grows in several phases, known as Anagen, Telogen, and Catagen.
The laser is most effective while hair is in the currently active growing stage (Anagen) as that is when the hair grows rapidly and contains more melanin (pigment).
Anagen – Growth Phase
Hair during the anagen phase is actively growing. Body hair growth in this phase lasts for a period of 1 to 6 weeks.
Catagen – Transition Phase
At the end of the anagen phase, your hair enters the catagen phase a transitional phase that lasts around 2 weeks. The hair follicle separates from the base, forming club hair.
Telogen – Resting Phase
Lastly, your hair enters the telogen phase, a resting phase when your hair is released and falls out naturally. The inactive phase tends to last around 3 months and the whole process is repeated.
This explains why laser hair removal needs to be carried out as a carefully timed course of treatments, in order to ensure that each hair is treated during its active phase.
At any given time, 85-90% of hair is in the Anagen phase, 1% in the Catagen phase and 10 to 15% in the Telogen phase.
Therefore patients can expect to notice an approximate 85 to 90% reduction of hair growth; although those with fine hair may see less (around 50%).
