Home IPL or Laser Hair Removal Devices
At this time of year, the shops are full with ‘essential’ hair and beauty devices, designed to tempt us for Christmas.
One ‘new kid on the block’ is the DIY IPL hair removal system. Initially the preserve of TV Shopping channels, these have become more mainstream with a range of devices available in High Street stores. Boots offer a choice of 7 devices ranging from £150 to £330 while Argos’s selection includes 9 IPL machines which range from £249.99 to £399.99 plus 2 home laser machines.
Do they work?
This might seem a tempting alternative to professional laser hair removal, but the big question is, are they worth it?
Firstly, the majority of home devices are based on IPL, a technology which is generally agreed to be less effective than proper laser, as it works like a flashbulb, destroying dark hair where it contrasts against pale skin – making it best for those with pale skin and dark hair combinations. This already sets an early disadvantage compared to laser technology.
Secondly, DIY systems are lower powered than those available in salons, making them less effective.
The Daily Telegraph’s recent assessment of laser hair removal vs IPL included an explanation from an expert within the hair removal industry on the use of home IPL devices:
“They work but are limited in power settings, thanks to EU regulations. They do however have a place to play as they can zap the odd hair after you’ve had a course of professional treatments.”
“They’re a good maintenance, but won’t give you good long term results alone.”
So if you’re thinking of investing in equipment to treat unwanted hair growth at home, the general consensus is that money might be better spent on professional treatments in clinics or salons which offer proper laser hair removal systems for optimum results on all skin/hair colour combinations.
